In 2005 the owners of the Stamford Mercury felt the archive needed more care and curatorial attention than a commercial company could provide. They therefore passed the archive to a specially formed charitable trust which was able to obtain a grant of £305,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for conservation and long term management. As a part of this programme, the papers have been rehoused on inert metal shelves and the newspapers conserved and stored in special archival boxes. They have also been copied on to microfilm. This will help fight off the ravages of time, dust and mishandling.
Ongoing operation of the archive is managed by a team of ten trustees, committed to the preservation of the newspapers. Many of these are local, some are historians. They represent a wide range of experience and professions.
